| | About Us Philosophy Dr. Maria Montessori, the Italian pediatrician who founded the philosophy, believed self-motivation to be the key to learning. Therefore, the Montessori teacher acts as a facilitator whose role is to stimulate interest in all facets of the child-centered learning environment. Montessori Education recognizes the importance of all developmental areas, including social, emotional, physical and intellectual needs. Characteristics of Our Programs Multi-Cultural. Over the years, our Program has become very appealing to families from many different countries as well as a wide variety of cultural backgrounds. During the 2009/10 school year, our total school population has 40% students representing minority backgrounds. This strong representation is so valuable for all of our students to learn about differences on a first-hand, daily basis. Individualized Education, recognizes individual learning ability, interest, style and pace. Students are not restricted to grade level curriculum.
Positive Self-Esteem is promoted by encouraging independence and initiative.
Respect for one another and the environment is encouraged.
Structured Environment is created, within which there is freedom of choice.
Multi-Age Classrooms are implemented at all levels. Ours is a nurturing environment, in which we use a positive, gentle, and consistent approach with all the students. Emphasis is placed on the use of uniquely designed Montessori Materials. These materials are manipulative; the students learn by doing. The materials are carefully sequenced to lead a child from simple concepts and concrete experiences to more complex concepts and abstractions.
Maria Montessori by Divya V. (Third level student) Maria Montessori is the person who started Montessori schools. She was born in Chiaravalle, Italy in the province of Ancona in 1870. She spent the majority of her life in Italy. She was a physician in Italy for many years, and she observed how children learn. Her desire to help children was so strong, so she became a teacher. She was a professor of anthropology at the University of Rome. She began a series of teacher training courses in London. Maria Montessori was appointed a government inspector of schools in Italy. She opened the Montessori training center in Laren, Netherlands in 1939. She also founded a series of training courses in India in 1939. She found the Montessori center in London in 1947.One of Maria Montessori’s contributions is that she got us our Montessori school, which is the best school (to me). Maria Montessori died in Noordwijk, Holland in 1952. One of the most interesting things I’ve learned about Maria Montessori is that she gave up her University chair and stopped medical practice to work with 60 children whose parents were working. I chose to report on Maria Montessori because she sounded interesting and I wanted to know more about her. I admire that she cared for children so much. Maria Montessori and I have two things in common- we both like school and we work hard if we really want something. If I could meet her, I would tell her that she changed many people’s lives by helping them and giving them another type of school that might be right for them. I would show her that she made my life different by giving me a school that is good for me and is my type of school. The way she lived helped make me confident. Back to Top
