Our Programs Preprimary Extended Care This program has been developed to provide an optimum environment for students who are with us beyond the three-hour Montessori class time. Parents have the option of enrolling in either the morning or afternoon extended care, or a combination of both. If enrolled in the Morning program, the child will spend the first half of the day in the Extended Care Room, participating in a variety of activities. Free choice from the many activity centers, group projects, quiet reading time as well as gross motor activities are available. A morning snack time is enjoyed by the group. The children will then have lunch before going to their afternoon Montessori Class. If enrolled in the Afternoon program, the child will spend the first half of the day in the Montessori Class, go to the Extended Care Room for lunch, followed by a nap. When nap time is over, the children will be free to choose from the activity centers. In addition, group snack, projects, cooking experiences, gross motor activities and quiet reading time are available. The Extended Care Program is available to our students when school is open. It closes for Presidents' Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and other major holidays. Extended Care closes for the two week winter break. The program also closes for a week during Spring Break. This provides an all-day option for our Kindergarten students. It is offered in the morning and in the afternoon. It is designed to complement the Montessori class time and provide a variety of other "Kindergarten" - type activities for the students. There is a nice balance between group, cooperative activities and individual work. This literature-based program focuses on selections of classic children's literature. The literature selection provides the theme for the week and related activities are presented throughout the week to support and enrich the topic. There is a focus on reading and writing activities. Handwriting Without Tears is incorporated daily. During part of this program the concept of a Teacher-centered environment is incorporated - combined with our typical child-centered (independent choice) approach. This exposes children to a more traditional teaching method in case you choose such an environment, instead of our Montessori Elementary, after Kindergarten. Science Enrichment lessons are presented over the course of the school year and the students receive Spanish instruction once a week. Weekly cooking activities that correlate to the weekly theme are also included. The all day Kindergarteners eat lunch together each day where we promote healthy food choices as well as good table manners.
